ScribeTunes: Skirmish

The newest ScribeTunes is here! American and Canadian powers combine in a collaborative project between me and Cassia Schaar to help writers have the best music for their writing. Have you ever spent half an hour or more trying to find the right mood music when you should be writing? Then this project is for you! Every other week we will be releasing playlists on Spotify and Apple Music that are themed for any writing scene you can think of!

This week we’re releasing a playlist of Skirmish. This playlist is full of pieces for small battles, not all-out wars, but your characters are in combat with an enemy and could very well not survive this battle.

Give the playlists a follow because we're adding new tracks as we find them!

We also want to talk a little about why we chose some of these tracks. These and more are included in our ultimate playlist!

My Picks:

"Commanding the Fury" by Mikolai Stroinski (The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt)
As soon as I heard this while playing the game I knew this would become a favorite. I love the guttural war cries throughout this piece dominated by drums and strings. It's perfect for battling monsters and seedy criminals.

"Careening into Danger" by Yoko Shimomura (Final Fantasy XV)
I know! Yet another FFXV piece, but this soundtrack is just so good! I love the balance of the upbeat instruments and the yearning violin. It's perfect for sci-fi or fantasy!

"Freedom Fighter" by Lorne Balfe (Assassin Creed III)
This piece carries a stronger tone of desperation and stakes than the first too. It's intense with a haunting wind instrument in the background. Whatever your characters are fighting during this song it's serious.

"The Threat of Offense and Defense" by Yuki Hayashi (My Hero Academia)
Can't leave our sci-fi writers behind! My Hero Academia is famous for its intense fight scenes and this one carries with it an electronic upbeat and emotion with the gorgeous acoustic strings.

"Small Pack of Wolves" by Ramin Djawadi (Game of Thrones)
Say what you want about GoT but it has a great soundtrack. I've used this many times while writing fantasy. It's short but it carries a great sense of danger. Something or someone menacing is coming for your characters and won't stop until it/she/he eliminates them.

Apple playlist coming soon!

Contribute:

These playlists are collaborative! We’d love to have your suggestions for new pieces to grow these music archives. We just have a few guidelines:

  • No lyrics! Scores only.
  • The tones have to stay consistent. No music that starts in one tone but shifts to another.
  • No jump scares! Nothing messes up writing flow like flinching.

Giveaway:

To thank you for helping grow this tool for writers and get the word out we’re doing a quarterly drawing for a three month Spotify or Apple Music subscription! Suggested tracks that are already in the playlist will not count as entries.

  • New tracks accepted into the playlist earn one entry each.
  • Follow Cassia and me on Instagram, this blog, and Spotify/Apple Music and comment that you did and that will earn you two entries each!
  • Sharing this post with #ScribeTunesMusic on Instagram will earn you three entries!

Leave your suggestions in the comments! And come back on April 24th for the Chasing playlist! Happy writing!
