Wonderful Word Wednesdays: Cogitation

It's Wonderful Word Wednesday again! Do you as a writer ever struggle finding that perfect word to describe something or you want to shake your writing up with some new words? Each Wednesday I post hand-picked descriptive words for writers and other vocabulary nerds out there. ;)

Example Sentence: After much cogitation and council with Claes and Dina, Mor decided to go along with Faol's plan.

Tea Tuesday: Coconut Pouchong

I'm not really a coffee person. I prefer tea, and I know a lot of fellow writers love tea, too. But have you ever wanted to break out of the Early Grey or English Breakfast norm and try something new? Well, let me help you find some cool new teas! If you need a little hot and flavorful boost to help you reach your writing goal or you're just a lover of tea or you'd like to try some tea but aren't fond of the stereotypical types, these Tea Tuesday posts are for you.

This weeks tea is ...

Coconut Pouchong

How I found it: While in downtown Marietta a few weeks ago, I noticed some of the antique shops were selling teas so I decided to buy three for Tea Tuesday and see how they were. 

The Tea: It basically is coconut-flavored oolong--cheap oolong. It tasted a bit old honestly. With a higher quality oolong perhaps it could be better, but with this it was eh. 

When I think of coconuts, I think of Zazu.

Serving Recommendations: I steeped it for four minutes and added sugar and cream which improved the flavor marginally.

How much is it and where can you get it? I bought this tea in an antique shop called Dupre's in Downtown Marietta GA. Unfortunately I think you can only get it locally because it is called "Marietta Select." I would link to a website, but I don't think there is one. Perhaps a similar tea can be found online. I bought this tea for $3 for a sample size pouch which had a good amount of tea. 

So how good is it? It was an okay tea. Like I said before, it would probably be better with a higher quality oolong. After having Tea Ave oolongs, it's hard to stomach cheaper ones. Three stars.

Soundtrack Sunday: The Climb (Flash vs. Arrow)

It's Soundtrack Sunday again! The day where I post awesome music to write to or just listen to for pleasure if you're a fellow soundtrack junkie.  I have been on a big superhero kick what with watching Arrow, the Flash, Daredevil, Agents of Shield, and now Avengers: the Age of Ultron coming out next week! So excited! 

Recently Arrow and The Flash had some epic collaboration episodes. Blake Neely masterfully combined both Arrow and The Flash scores in a fantastic way and here is one of the highlights from the Flash vs. Arrow special. The piece starts with lovely soft piano and then comes in with a reprise of the Arrow theme. Next comes an intense section with drums that just gives you chills and the piece ends with gorgeous female vocals. Monthly Summary: April 2015

Wow this month is nearly over! So much went on this month though it was more relaxing than March or February lol. I'm now doing a post at the end of the month where I basically summarize what happen so it's a bit like a journal. I've tried journaling and it doesn't work out too well with me so let's try this lol. I'm also going to include some insights about my writing and the blog. ^ ^


What I did:

1.) I turned 22! Wow, I'm getting old. It's weird ... I don't feel that old. No gray hairs yet thank goodness.

2.) I did Camp NaNoWriMo for the first time ever! And I'm pretty sure I'm going to win since this post isn't exactly at the end of the month I don't completely know yet, but I'll update this when I do lol. My official novel is Red Hood, but I also worked on Subsapien Biomech too with any extra time. My goal for Camp NaNo was 30K and for Subsapien well ... whatever I could squeeze in, but I got progress and that's the point. ^ ^

3.) I guest posted on two blogs! Check out my posts on Super Swankified and the Dreaming Hobbit! And check out some of Mae's and Emily's regular posts too!

4.) I celebrated Easter even though it kind of sucked because I got sick. :P

5.) I finally finished a piece of art I was working on for months! This is a drawing of Mor (right) and Faol (left) from my steampunk fantasy Red Hood!

What I Learned:

1.) Blog Lovin' is amazing. It's a great way to keep track of a lot of blogs (which I try my hardest to do, but I try to follow. so. many). It's really helped me navigate through the blogging community. If you have Blog Lovin' let me know because I will follow you.

2.) When people comment on your blog don't just say thank you, but ask them questions. It's amazing the conversations you get into. And speaking of comments, I'm trying a new commenting system since I've heard from several people that commenting is difficult. Hopefully this one will at long last work.

3.) I had a lot of stress going on at the beginning of the month and I really really didn't feel like writing, but I told myself "Just do a little bit." This kept me at least doing a hundred words a day.

4.) Like I said, I've had Camp NaNoWriMo going on, but most of my friends have been too busy for word wars, so I started setting timers for ten minute stretches and this really helped me concentrate and get my word count in.

5.) Because of self set deadlines to get work in to some editors and agents, I have been working on two books right now and that has been really difficult. Actively writing in two books at the same time is a challenge. Editing in one and writing in another isn't as hard to me, but this has been exhausting. I'll be really happy when I finish one.

What I'm Going to Do:

Next month gonna be crazy.

1.) Next month I'm going to continue working on Red Hood and Subsapien Biomech and hopefully finish SB so I can concentrate on Red Hood, because that one I'm prepping to send to editors and an agent who have requested it. *crosses fingers*

2.) I'm also going to be attending my cousin's wedding in Tennessee!

3.) I will be working on more drawings next month though I'm starting one of this month and I'm not sure if it'll be done in time. I want to work on some drawings of Matt (Subsapien), Mor (Red Hood), and hopefully one of Bryce and Matt actually happy lol. I'd like to do more, but we'll see if I can do those first. ^ ^'

See? They're so very sad and I must draw them happy now.

4.) I'm currently reading From the Mouth of Elijah by Bryan Davis, Failstate Legends by John W. Otte and I'm hoping to start The Seventh Door by Bryan Davis and Failstate Nemesis next month. ^ ^ I'm a slow reader. ^ ^=

5.) I'm going to my friend's graduation in Florida for a week!

Favorite Screen Characters Tag!

Today I'm doing the Favorite Screen Characters tag! Thank you, Adriana Gabrielle, for tagging me and now I'm finally getting to it lol.

Ten of my favorite. *cackles* I have so many favorites this is going to be hard, but I shall do it. I've wanted to put more geeky stuff on this blog and this is the perfect post to do it.


1.) Rick Castle played by Nathan Fillion from Castle - He's one of the best portrayals I've seen of a writer on television, I quote him so much, and his show has cheered me up so many times when I've been sad.

A lot of people ... actually.

2.) Thor played by Chris Hemsworth from Thor, The Avengers, and Thor: The Dark World - Thor has been my character crush for years now ever since I saw him for the first time in the theaters. He's noble, he's got powers, he's blond and blue-eyed, so he's my kind of fella.

I can't look at this pic too long or I'll swoon.

3.) Katniss Everdeen played by Jennifer Lawrence from the Hunger Games, Catching Fire, and The Mockingjay Part 1 - Katniss is such an inspiration to me. She's brave, fearless, kind, and has the best lines. Love her!

4.) Eowyn played by Miranda Otto from the Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers and the Return of the King - She is my woman role model. She's feminine, beautiful, brave, and she slays the Witch King!

I wish I could use a sword like she can.

5.) Katara voiced by Mae Whitman from Avatar: The Last Airbender - The rules never said I couldn't do animated characters lol. Katara inspired me to do Kung Fu! She's determined, motherly, and gives epic speeches.

6.) The Tenth Doctor played by David Tennant from Doctor Who - He's my favorite doctor! I love his outfit, I love this voice, I love his happy and loving personality. He's amazing.

7.) Felicity Smoak played by Emily Bett Rickards from Arrow - She's quirky, she's smart, and I love her piercings.

So cute. ^ ^

8.) Armin Alert voiced by Marina Inoue from Attack on Titan - I like how though he's not the strongest of the survey corps physically he has his own strengths. He's a really inspiration to me to be strong in my own way as a person.

It's okay, Armin. :(

9.) Aragorn played by Viggo Mortensen from all three of the Lord of the Rings movies - He fights with a sword, he's noble, faithful, sacrificial, and King of Gondor. Nuff said.

Tea Tuesday: Passion

How I found it: I tried this tea a while back for the first time while being stuck at a bus stop for three hours and I walked down to a nearby hospital that had a Starbucks. I got this tea because it sounded interesting. It was so cold I was clutching a cup filled with this tea for warmth. I really didn't think of the taste too much until later in the day when I became unsure of it. Fast forward until a few months ago, I found the tea again in Walmart and decided to give it a second chance--and I'm not sure if that was the best idea.

The Tea: The tea sounds really enticing with hibiscus, licorice, orange peel, cinnamon, lemon grass, rose hips, and other "tropical flavors." I've tried teas that have included all of these flavors and like them so I though I'd like this. But the hibiscus flavor overwhelmed all the others so I couldn't taste anything else except maybe a hint of rose, but not much. It's like the tea was too busy with too many flavors, making it overly tart. It was definitely a unique flavor (that wouldn't get out of my mouth)--but overly passionate, I think.

Serving Recommendations: I steeped this tea for the recommended five minutes and that didn't do any good. I tried adding sugar and cream, but it was like the tea was immune and didn't change its taste now matter how much I added.

How much is it and where can you get it? You can find this tea at the Tazo website or at some Walmarts and coffee shops for varying relatively cheap amounts depending on if you want a box or just one teabag. 

So how good is it? Not very good at all. I ended up pouring it out, washing out my mouth, and switching to another tea. I wanted to like it, but unfortunately I really didn't.

Soundtrack Sunday: I Don't Blame You (Arrow)

It's Soundtrack Sunday again! The day where I post awesome music to write to or just listen to for pleasure if you're a fellow soundtrack junkie. I am a big Arrow fan. I absolutely love the show and normally I'm more of a Marvel fan, but here is where I make my exception. It has so many good characters and moments and epicness, but enough gushing about the visual aspects of the show and let's start on the soundtrack. 

Though the soundtrack is synthetic, it still hits on the key points of the show. I love how it has a theme for characters especially the villains, but today I'm showing one of the touching pieces that goes along with the show's notorious nature to rip your bloody feels out. This is a moving piece with electric harp, piano, and strings that's soft and sad and just lovely. It's good for one of those sad or heart to heart moments for a sci-fi or superhero novel scene. A Book Review of The Death Cure by James Dashner

This is the last book of the Maze Runner series. Tears. It makes me a bit sad that the series is ended, but the movies coming out gives me a bit of hope for reliving the series, so lets dive in!

What I liked: The opening is definitely intense. As per usual James Dashner grabs you from the start. I feel so bad for Thomas and all the hell WICKED has put him through and now he's gotten to the point where he's just tired of running around in circles. Though Thomas has grown a bit callous through all of his suffering, he still keeps a good heart.

The plot is very intense, but with good resting points. Several spots had me gripping the book from crank attacks to WICKED lab experiments. The pacing has definitely improved and now we finally see what WICKED wants--which I won't spoil for ya. But some much needed answers are finally revealed and it's so great to finally know! There are lots of twists that will throw you for a loop. 

In this book, a rebellion is introduced called the Right Arm. This is interesting, but like a lot of science-fiction stories Thomas and his band of friends are on their own side which is all right, but I like it when the rebellion lines up with the characters so it's a united force (Star Wars for example). 

I like that we see the Gladers far more in this book. That's one thing that frustrated me in the Scorch Trials is there were long periods where you don't see a single Glader, and I missed the boys! Newt and Minho are more in the spotlight in this book--especially Newt for reasons I can't tell you, but just know your feels will be shredded. Both of them bring some levity to the story.

I didn't really care for Brenda much in the Scorch Trials, but I do grow to like her more in this book though still not as much as Theresa. Theresa is awesome so there. Rat Man whose real name is Janson (no spoilers there don't worry) is a great villain. He is so ... aggravatingly polite yet evil at the same time. Also I definitely felt for the regular residents of the dangerous world, the Munies, and even the cranks.

One of my favorite things about this book is that we finally see how the normal folk in the Maze Runner world live in cities and Crank Palace. As characteristic with the other books of the series there is much good creepiness such as laboratories, more cranks, and lots of creative devices like electrocuting grenade launchers, gel casing, an interesting machine that checks people for the flare, and this drug called Bliss which reminds me a bit of Doctor Who. 

Though James Dashner doesn't have my favorite style of writing, he does some things especially well like ending each chapter with a cliffhanger that makes you have to read on. His description really makes you feel like you are in the scene. You feel very close to Thomas. Some of his lines make you see very clear if not creepy visuals. This is one of my favorite lines of description: 

"A smear of blood dripping down his face like red tears." (Page 243) 

I also like the circularity (elements from before coming into play) and how the book ends where it begins if that makes sense and if not good, you'll find out when you read it.

The climax is very intense with some big twists and the series does end pretty well, except for one thing that's a major spoiler. But the ending isn't horrible, I promise you that. It left me with a bittersweet yet mostly satisfied feeling. I would have liked an epilogue, but it was pretty good all the same.

The two most resonating themes of the story are letting go of the past and trust. Thomas deals with this a lot with Theresa and what she did to him in the Scorch Trials. It takes until near the end to finally move on from this. Also the Gladers deal with what they did in the lives they didn't remember. 

"I don't want to know anything. Not one more thing. All I care about is what we're going to do from here out, not stuff about my past or yours or WICKED's. Nothing." - Thomas (Page 139)

Because of the things they did in their pasts that put some rifts between them all and finally Thomas says to Minho, "Trust me like you did when you wanted me to be the Keeper of the Runners." (Page 216)

Trust is such a key point for relationships without trust we can't be as close to anyone. The Death Cure definitely shows much about this.


What I didn't like: Despite all the good things about the book, there a few things I didn't like so much. There were a few instances where I felt were a bit illogical. At one point Thomas is about to be sedated, but he gets away fairly easily. If the baddies just strapped him down like they had been doing before I felt like he would have just been sedated. At that part, I actually wanted the characters to fail so I could get some answers.

Some of the writing bothered me. It felt it out of place for Thomas to think of the other Gladers as "boy." There were several action and reaction errors and though some of the settings were wonderfully described others weren't established barely at all. I also wanted more variation in speech with the characters. They all talked basically the same. The biggest differences were from WICKED to cranks to Gladers, but I wanted more variation within each of those groups. The only one that stood out within the Gladers was Newt.

Aspects about some characters annoyed me. I felt like majority of them were unfeeling and mean and I wanted a little more kindness. It's one thing I enjoyed more about the Maze Runner film than the Maze Runner book. I wish Thomas also was more forgiving than he was toward Theresa earlier. I know she did something horrible to him, but I got to the point where I thought, "Geez, Thomas, get over it!"

I hate that one character died. I could handle the other major death, but this one dropped out of nowhere and I just thought, "Seriously?"

Like I said before, I wish the ending lasted a bit longer and we had a bit more.

Content Cautions: There aren't many huge cautions in this book, but there are a few. H*** is used about eight times and d*** about eight times also. Some crude humor about butts are included. The cranks are scary and have a degree of gore, nothing extremely graphic, but it may be disturbing to some.

Over all the book was pretty good, not my favorite of the book, but a satisfying conclusion to the Maze Runner series. Three point eight to four stars!
